Orianna, Lady of Clockwork: gear that turns into a unit

Orianna, Lady of Clockwork, a Legend from the Riftbound Radiance set

Riot has shown Orianna, Lady of Clockwork, a two-domain Legend from Radiance, numbered 145/167 and illustrated by Envar Studio. She is not just another card: she carries a brand new card type with her, Equipment Units, because her text turns a friendly gear into an actual unit. She releases with the set on October 23.

The cardAn ability you pay for every turn

There is a single line of text on the Legend: at the start of your Main Phase, you may pay 1 to choose a friendly gear, and it becomes a unit gear with Might equal to its Energy cost until you choose another gear with her. Three things matter there, and each one is worth reading slowly.

First, the ability triggers at the start of your Main Phase, not whenever you please, and it is optional. Second, it costs 1 Energy every single time. Third — and this is the one that shapes everything — the transformation lasts only until you choose another gear. Orianna keeps exactly one gear-unit standing at a time, and swapping means switching the previous one off.

The Might is not printed anywhere: it is the gear’s own Energy cost. A 3-cost gear becomes a 3 Might unit, a 6-cost gear becomes a 6 Might unit. Expensive gear, which until now you paid for purely to get an effect, suddenly buys you a body as well.

The mechanicWhat Equipment Units are

Riot introduces them in the set overview as a new unit type. There was already a precedent: Gear Units arrived in Vendetta with the Patched Porobot. What Radiance adds is that Equipment — the cards you attach to a unit — can now become units in their own right.

Why it matters here. This is the first time a Riftbound Legend changes the type of the cards on the board rather than their numbers. Deckbuilders in Italy will notice it immediately at the Pre-Rifts on October 16–22: a 6-cost gear turning into a 6 Might body rewrites the maths of a fight, and the player across the table has to learn to read the board differently. Assuming gear is harmless is the fastest way to lose a battlefield.

Riot does put one fence up straight away, and it cuts off the wilder combinations: when an Equipment becomes a unit, it is automatically unequipped from whatever was carrying it. No stacking equipped units on top of one another — you pick the bonus or the body, not both at once.

Another card from the same night confirms this is where the set is heading: Aphelios, Exalted, one of the Heartsteel Overnumbers, has text that fires when you attach an Equipment to him. The theme runs across the set rather than sitting on one card.

CommunityReddit is already talking Overnumbers

The same evening, on r/riftboundtcg, user u/LazySquirrel24 opened a thread reporting an Overnumber version of Orianna. The thread went up with no images and no detail, so there is nothing verifiable about that card yet; what Riot has confirmed, and what makes the report plausible, is that all nine new Legends in the set get an Overnumber version, available with the artist’s signature too.

The short version

  • Orianna, Lady of Clockwork is a two-domain Legend, numbered 145/167, illustrated by Envar Studio.
  • For 1 Energy per turn she turns a friendly gear into a unit with Might equal to its cost, one at a time.
  • She introduces Equipment Units: when an Equipment becomes a unit, it unequips automatically.
