PlayRiftbound.com replaces carde.io: what changes from September 14

From September 14, 2026 Riftbound organized play moves house: PlayRiftbound.com takes over from carde.io for finding events, registering, playing and running tournaments. You will log in with your Riot ID, with no third-party account linking. The switch kicks in with registrations for the Radiance Pre-Rift events, and Riot warns that community projects built on carde.io data may stop working.

The switchWhat happens on September 14

From that day PlayRiftbound.com is no longer just the news site: it becomes the place where you find events and sign up, and also where you check pairings and report results while the tournament is running, phone in hand. The Rules Hub and the articles stay where they are, with a few sections refreshed in look.

Riot is upfront about features: the platform is built from scratch and will launch with the essentials. «We are building this platform from the ground up», the announcement reads, with priority on what organized play needs right away. Anyone without a Riot account would do well to create one before registrations open, so as not to get stuck at the wrong moment.

The reasonWhy Riot is leaving carde.io

Carde.io accompanied Riftbound through its whole first year, from the weekly Nexus Nights to the major tournaments, and the announcement acknowledges it openly. The reason for the move is about the future: many of the ideas Riot has for organized play work better, or only work, on an in-house platform. On top of that, Riot ID login removes the account-linking step in one go, historically one of the points where the most registrations are lost.

No account linking: you sign in with the Riot credentials you already use for the other games. Anyone without one has to create it before registrations open.

history

Matches not lost

Riot says it is working with UVS and carde.io to migrate player history to the new platform, so results accumulated so far should not disappear.

Why it matters to us. The Italian calendar fits just in time: the Lucca Showdown Series is scheduled for September 11-13, before the switch date, so it is still played on the current system. The jump comes right after, with registrations for the Radiance Pre-Rift events: anyone planning to sign up should check now that they have a working Riot account. There is also a side effect that hits our scene directly: several Italian community tools read carde.io data for rankings, registrations and decklists, and Riot admits those projects will probably be disrupted by the change, while saying it does not want to sink them.

StoresOrganizers get new tools

The part about stores is perhaps the most concrete. At launch, organizers get a single place to manage registrations and be found by players, with fewer account headaches: it applies to the Thursday night Nexus Night as much as to a Pre-Rift, and down the line to Nexus Cups and Challenge Series. Store owners who have not yet received transition instructions should contact their UVS representative or regional partner.

The full picture for stores is not there yet, though: Riot points to an update in late October, the follow-up to the State of Play article that introduced the 2027 competitive system in early August.

NextWhat is already on the table for 2027

No development timeline, but a list of open projects: better tools for organizers and judges, from local events to large tournaments with their side events; more ways to compete, including broader support for 2v2 tournaments; simpler decklist creation and validation across formats; and a more convenient card search. Riot promises semi-regular updates on what it is working on, big or small.

In short

  • From September 14, 2026 registrations, pairings and results move from carde.io to PlayRiftbound.com.
  • You log in with your Riot ID: no more account linking, but you need the credentials ready.
  • The Lucca Showdown Series (September 11-13) stays on the current system; the change bites from the Radiance Pre-Rift events.
  • Match history will be migrated; community tools built on carde.io are at risk of stopping.
