Riftbound overhauls competitive play: Skirmish retires, Continentals and Worlds arrive
August's State of Play redraws Riftbound's organized play from the ground up for 2027: the Summoner Skirmish retires after Radiance, Regional Qualifiers get a new name and cadence, and a five-rung competitive ladder emerges, topped by the game's first World Championship. For local store players there are two concrete additions too: the monthly Nexus Cup and a migration of events onto Riot's own platform. Here's the full map.

The new ladderFrom your local store to the world title in five rungs
The 2027 pyramid looks like this: at the base, weekly Nexus Nights (unchanged) and the new Nexus Cup, a monthly in-store celebration built to taste competitive without the pressure. The first true competitive rung is the Riftbound Challenge Series, replacing the Summoner Skirmish across a curated store network; above it sit the Showdown Series (expanding: more events, more organizers, more regions), then the Riftbound Regionals — the former Regional Qualifiers, now 3-4 per set on a steadier global cadence — and the Riftbound Continentals, heirs to the Regional Championships: four marquee global stops, now three-day events. At the top, the Riftbound World Championship caps the season and crowns the world champion.
| Today (2026) | From 2027 | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Summoner Skirmish | Challenge Series | Curated store network, no overlapping events |
| Showdown Series | Showdown Series | More events, organizers and regions |
| Regional Qualifiers | Riftbound Regionals | 3-4 per set, consistent global cadence |
| Regional Championships | Riftbound Continentals | 4 global venues, three-day format |
| — | World Championship | The season capstone crowning the world champion |
| — | Nexus Cup | Monthly in-store event, competitive without pressure |
StuttgartEurope plays for $50,000 and the first Worlds seats
2026's grand finale is locked in: the European Regional Championship runs November 6-8 at Messe Stuttgart (Hall H). The top 64 finishers from Regional Qualifiers qualify — invitations aren't region-locked, so a qualified European could pick Las Vegas instead — and it's played in Standard with Radiance, released just two weeks earlier: expect a wide-open meta. The format is a marathon: 6 Swiss rounds on Friday, 6 more on Saturday to set the Top 8, single elimination on Sunday. On the line: $50,000 ($10,000 to the winner), commemorative playmats and promos for all, plated Best-of Legends with exclusive Overnumbered artwork — and above all, the top 8 fly to the first World Championship. The North American Regional Championship (Convergence Fest, Las Vegas, December 11-13) and the new Chinese Regional Championship mirror the same structure.
The platformEvents leave Carde.io
From September 14, stores begin migrating from Carde.io to PlayRiftbound.com, Riot's own platform for registrations and events: Showdown Series stay on Carde.io through 2026, while both Regional Championships debut directly on the new system. Nothing changes for community tournaments, but for official store events it's worth creating an account early. One State of the Game side note: 2v2 is getting more love too — steady, non-rotating-style support after 2028 and sets designed to play out of the box, starting with Legacy's Champion Decks.
Questions & answersWhat you need to know
Does the Summoner Skirmish disappear right away?
No: Vendetta's windows (August 17 and September 14) run as planned and the program closes with Radiance. From 2027 its slot belongs to the Challenge Series at curated stores.
Are my Skirmish byes still worth anything?
Yes: they remain valid throughout 2027 at Riftbound Regionals and Regional events, with compensation promised for byes that never get used.
How do I qualify for the European Regional Championship in Stuttgart?
By finishing top 64 at a 2026 Regional Qualifier. Europe's last shot is Barcelona (August 21-23); the Los Angeles RQ in late September also works, since invitations aren't region-locked.
When is the first World Championship?
Riot hasn't announced date or venue yet: what's confirmed is that the top 8 of each 2026 Regional Championship get invited. Details arrive with the 2027 plans.
