Bombs versus Deflect: Radiance’s first rules knot
Ziggs surfaced last night, and in under twenty-four hours r/riftboundtcg has produced two separate threads asking the same question: what happens when a row of Bombs goes off against a unit with Deflect? The token’s text is official, Ziggs’ is not, and Riot has published no answer yet. The set becomes legal on October 23, so there is time — but the knot is real.
The cardWhat a Bomb actually does
The Bomb token is the one piece of the puzzle Riot has confirmed: it appears in the official Radiance overview, it is numbered RAD T02 and it is illustrated by Kudos Productions. It carries two keywords. Deploy pins it to a battlefield and kills it the moment an opponent holds that place. Deathknell is what happens when it dies: deal 2 to an enemy unit there and kill every other Bomb you control in the same spot — each of which, in turn, has Deathknell.
Around the token sit the Ziggs cards photographed at Regional Qualifier Los Angeles: the Legend Ziggs, Hexplosives Expert, who plays a Bomb onto a battlefield for 1 Energy and a rune, and the signature spell Hexplosive Minefield, which kills any number of friendly Bombs to replay them all onto a single place at end of turn. Riot has published neither: the images are photos taken by the crowd.
The questionFive Bombs and one Nasus
The scenario is u/DatKelvo’s. Five Bombs on a battlefield; the opponent moves a green Nasus in and is set to hold the place. Deploy blows up all five Bombs, each Deathknell wants to hit an enemy unit there, and the only one available is the Nasus — which has Deflect. The question: am I forced to pay five times, or can I let the effect fizzle for want of a target?
A few hours earlier u/MoscioTV had opened a near-identical thread, asking whether Ziggs’ Bombs really do choose a target and whether five Bombs means paying the Deflect cost five times. In the comments u/DaKaleidoscope confirms a target does have to be chosen — but nobody cites a source.
The printed textWhat choosing really costs
On cards already in print, the Deflect reminder says one thing: opponents must pay a rune to choose that unit with a spell or ability. Deflect 2 doubles the bill. And the green Nasus with Deflect 2 does exist: it is Nasus, Ascended, a Calm unit from Vendetta.
If every Deathknell is an ability that chooses, five Bombs against Deflect 2 want ten runes to land. No player has ten runes to spend at that moment, and the prevailing reading in the threads is that nobody is ever forced to pay a cost: with no payment there is no legal choice, and the damage never happens. That is a reasonable reading, not a verdict — u/DatKelvo himself recalls the rule «was changed at some point», and until Riot updates the rulebook for Radiance it stays a community interpretation.
Why it matters for us. Bombs are dirt cheap: this is exactly the kind of archetype Italian stores see in week one, because it needs no rare cards. Which means the question will reach a Nexus Night table long before anyone has read an official rules update, and the judge will have to settle it on the spot. Worth knowing now — and the Deflect units already in circulation, starting with Nasus, Ascended, suddenly look interesting against the Ziggs deck.
The short version
- Two r/riftboundtcg threads ask the same thing: how Bombs and Deflect interact.
- The Bomb token’s text is official; Ziggs and Hexplosive Minefield are unconfirmed photos.
- Five Bombs into a Deflect 2 unit would want ten runes; the prevailing reading is that the effect simply fizzles.
- Riot has published no ruling. Radiance becomes legal on October 23.
