How to tell a wave 1 Origins booster box from a reprint

The Origins booster box has been printed several times: the first wave at launch on October 31, 2025, more between December and February, then the big May 2026 shipment. The front is identical and so are the cards inside, as far as anyone knows. The differences sit on the back and on the bottom of the box, and in the United States a wave 1 box already sells for far more. Here are the three checks, with photos from six different collectors.

These differences are collector observations, documented with photos on X, TikTok and Reddit. Riot Games and UVS Games have never published an official distinction between print runs, and no box carries a «first edition» mark.

ContextSeveral waves, no marking

Origins sold out almost at once. As early as October 2025 Riot announced an extra print run reaching stores for launch and reopened Merch Store preorders shipping «late December or early January»; on November 10, in its launch review, it promised more product «by the end of the year». On March 31, 2026 came the announcement of the bigger shipment, the May one, with a pledge to keep reprinting «until the market reaches more healthy quantities».

The names wave 1, wave 2 and wave 3 did not come from Riot, which does not number its print runs: distributors and collectors use them, and they change from region to region. In the United States «wave 2» reached stores in January 2026; in Europe, in the same weeks, a distributor was announcing «allocations for the third wave» and German stores were receiving a «wave 3» of a dozen cases in late January, while Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands were still waiting for the second. That is why, in the rest of this article, I only distinguish between wave 1 and reprints.

The guideThree checks, from quickest to surest

1. The line under the QR code, on the back

Turn the box over. Under the QR code in the top right sits the address riot.com/riftbound: on wave 1 it is bold, on the reprints it is regular weight. Look closely and the whole text block of the first run is printed heavier. It is the fastest check, but on its own it is not enough: under the wrong light, bold is easy to misjudge.

2. The manufacturer block, at the bottom of the back

Here the difference is clear-cut and does not depend on lighting. On wave 1 the legal paragraph ends with just two lines: the UVS Games address in Seattle and uvsgames.com/contact-us. On the reprints three extra lines appear: «Manufacturer», «Importer (UK)» with a London office and «Importer (EU)» with the Dutch office in Zeist, followed by «For questions or support». If you can read importers, it is not a wave 1 box.

3. The bottom, with the barcode

On the bottom of the box is the label with the barcode and the code RB-01BD01-EN. On wave 1 the code and the lines next to it are bold, and to the right of the barcode the CE and UKCA marks appear before the recycling symbols. On the reprints photographed so far the code is regular weight and the two marks are missing. Everything else stays the same: same barcode 810155273248, same number 22239, same «Printed in Japan». So do not rely on the barcode or the number: they match across print runs.

One caveat on the marks: the signal that counts is the bold print. On Reddit one user posted two boxes that both carried CE and UKCA, convinced he had two different waves, and the community asked whether he was sure. Treat the two marks as confirmation, not proof: if they are missing the box is not wave 1, if they are there check the bold print.

What about the May shipment? I do not yet have a dedicated photo comparison for the May 2026 print run, so I am not describing it. The rule works in reverse, though: if the back is not bold and lists importers, the box is not wave 1, whichever reprint it is. If you have a box that behaves differently from these photos, send me the back and bottom on Discord and I will update the article.

InsideThe cards: identical? Here the community argues

Riot has never announced differences between the cards of the various print runs, and in June 2026 people asking on Reddit whether the reprints carried errata-corrected text were told no: errata live in the documents, not on the cards. No card carries an edition symbol. Those are the facts. Then there are the collectors’ photos, and there the picture gets blurrier.

In January 2026 one user compared the backs of two cards, reprint on the left and wave 1 on the right, and the reprint comes out darker. In July another photographed two Dazzling Aurora: the wave 1 copy, on the left, darker and with no foil on the symbol in the bottom right; the reprint lighter, with a different foil treatment and a foiled symbol. In the same thread, though, a third user replied that his wave 1 Aurora is identical to the reprints. The cautious reading is that these are normal print variations between batches, until someone runs a systematic comparison over dozens of cards.

On pull rates the anecdotes run in every direction: some swear the second run is stingier, others found three overnumbers and a signature in a reprint case after four empty wave 1 boxes. Those are samples of four or six boxes, and numbers like that prove nothing; the same goes for the never-confirmed rumour that reprints contain no signatures. For a player, then, one box is as good as another. The visible difference lives on the box, and only matters while the box stays sealed.

PricesWhat the difference is worth today

In the United States the premium already exists: in late July 2026 the collector who photographed the three boxes wrote that wave 1 boxes «sell for $500+» on eBay, against roughly 180 for a reprint, and as early as April Reddit was quoting one and a half to two times the price of a reprint. In Europe the market does not separate them yet: on Cardmarket the Origins box is a single product, averaging around 180 € with more than 600 copies listed and no way to tell which run. A few Italian shops have started writing it in the title, «wave 3, reprint», and that is the first sign the distinction is reaching Europe too.

Why it matters to us. On Cardmarket and in the Marketplace nobody can prove a print run with a word in the title: before paying a premium for a «first print», ask for one photo of the back and one of the bottom, then check the bold print, the importers and the CE/UKCA marks. It cuts both ways: if you put away a box bought at launch, between October and November 2025, take a look. It might be a wave 1 and, over time, be worth more than you think.

My takeA collector’s premium, not a player’s

I have told a similar story about the Nexus Night packs and the Teemo «GGEZ»: same card, two print runs, a market that sooner or later learns to tell them apart. With Origins boxes the scarcity of wave 1 is real, because at launch boxes were opened, not stored. But the premium rests on printing details no institution certifies: grading companies grade cards, not boxes, and Riot has promised reprints for as long as they are needed. My advice is simple: if you play, buy the cheapest reprint; if you collect, do not pay the premium without photos, keep the shrink wrap intact and store the box away from light. Cases are a separate story, with a code instead of bold print: you will find it in the article on wave 1 Origins cases. Updated sealed prices are in the Prices section.

In short

  • The Origins box exists in several print runs (wave 1 at launch, reprints from December 2025 and the May 2026 shipment); wave numbering changes from region to region.
  • Wave 1: riot.com/riftbound in bold under the QR, no importers in the legal block, code RB-01BD01-EN in bold and CE and UKCA marks on the bottom.
  • Reprints: regular weight, Importer (UK) and Importer (EU) lines, usually no CE and UKCA. Barcode and number 22239 are the same and tell you nothing.
  • No confirmed difference between the cards; photos of different foil and saturation remain print variations until there is a systematic comparison.
  • In the US wave 1 goes for over $500 against 180 for a reprint; in Europe Cardmarket does not separate them yet. Always ask for photos of back and bottom.

FAQWave 1 Origins boxes

How do I know if my Origins box is wave 1?
Check the back: on wave 1 the riot.com/riftbound line under the QR is bold and the legal block has no UK and EU importer lines. Then the bottom: code RB-01BD01-EN in bold and CE and UKCA marks next to the recycling symbols.

Are the CE and UKCA marks enough?
No. If they are missing, the box is not wave 1; if they are there, still check the bold print and the importer lines, which are the more reliable signals.

Do the barcode or the number 22239 change between runs?
No. Barcode, number and «Printed in Japan» are identical on wave 1 and reprints. Do not use them to tell the runs apart.

Are wave 1 cards different?
There is no confirmed difference: same text, no edition symbol, no printed errata. Some collectors have photographed slightly different foil and saturation, others have not: for now these are print variations.

Is a wave 1 box worth more?
In the United States, yes: over $500 against about 180 for a reprint, based on eBay sales in July 2026. In Europe Cardmarket does not distinguish print runs yet and the price is a single one.

Is there an official confirmation of these differences?
No. They are collector observations backed by photos. Riot and UVS Games have never documented the print runs.
