Tournament rules: what changes at the table on October 16

Riot has published the October 2026 tournament rules update, in effect from October 16 alongside the Radiance Pre-Rift. It is signed by Vriss, who frames it as a clean-up driven by judge feedback. But there are things in there a player wants to know before sitting down: when a play stops being reversible, that bluffing is explicitly allowed, how late you can read your notes, and what you have to register if you run Neeko.

New tournament rules take effect
in …

The big oneWhen a play becomes final

The Gameplay Decisions policy (section 509) exists to leave players some room: Riftbound is not aiming at chess' touch-move. But, Vriss writes, it is not meant to let you take back an error «once their opponent is required to call information to their attention». The official example:

  • Player A moves their 3 Might unit to a battlefield and passes focus.
  • Player B points out that their 2 Might unit at that battlefield is now at 4, thanks to their legend Wuju Bladesman.
  • At that point A can no longer change the move or the pass.

The principle is that at high Organized Play Level — OPL, the seriousness tier of an event, from a store evening up to professional play — nobody should feel they have to play the game for their opponent, or get punished for someone else's mistake. At casual OPL, letting an opponent take it back is not required, but Riot encourages it for sportsmanship.

Worth knowingThe entries that touch players

The changelog runs to about forty lines. These are the ones you will see at the table:

Games Time Pavia — official sponsor
  • Radiance joins the Standard sets. Legal from October 16.
  • Neeko needs proper registration. New registration requirements cover decks with special deckbuilding rules: the extra legends for Neeko, Blending In go on the decklist.
  • Bluffing is allowed. It is now written down that a player may bluff about their own private information.
  • Notes, up to a point. Outside notes may be consulted during sideboarding and after battlefields are revealed, but must be put away once opening hands are drawn — that is, before mulligans.
  • Tokens must be legible. They have to be represented by card objects with a clear ready state and be understandable to the opponent.
  • Loops must be fully deterministic with no random elements. Examples have been added.
  • Altered cards: Might and Might Bonus now join the parts that must stay intact.
  • Chosen Champion sleeves: the requirements now cover secret zones too.
  • Deck checks are randomized at the start of a round and verify every element of the deck.
  • Floor judges must correct errors they see, even when no player calls them over.
penalties

Deciding a winner wrongly

Knowingly attempting to engage in Improperly Determining a Winner is now classed as cheating, with a higher penalty at Professional OPL. The changelog does not spell out the detail: the definition lives in the full document.

limited

Two clarifications

Best-of-one sideboarding does not apply to limited competitions, and neither does the one-for-one card exchange during limited sideboarding.

RemediesWhat the judge does when it goes wrong

The remedies section moved too. A «full round cycle», used to time certain penalties, now completes when the player on whose turn the error occurred begins their next turn. A simple rewind now explicitly includes the runes spent on the action being undone, which are readied or unrecycled. On overpayment of a cost, the erring player no longer gets floating resources when a simple rewind is not possible. And Failure to Maintain Game State warnings are fully exempt from upgrades.

Riot also announces a companion document to the tournament rules, breaking down the philosophy and intent behind each rule, mainly from the judge's side: «more details to come soon».

Why it matters for us. Pre-Rift runs in Italian stores from October 16, and from then on every rated event follows this text. Anyone aiming at the European Regional Championship in Stuttgart on November 6-8, where Radiance is legal, has exactly one week to adjust: notes go away before mulligans, and the decklist has to be filled in the new way if Neeko is in it. On agreed draws, which we covered this morning, the question is a separate one from what is penalised here.

The short version

  • The new tournament rules take effect on October 16, with the Radiance Pre-Rift.
  • A play can no longer be taken back once your opponent points out information they were required to show you.
  • Bluffing about your own private information is explicitly allowed; outside notes close before mulligans.
  • Radiance joins Standard, and decks running Neeko have their own registration requirements.
