Sacramento Showdown: Nam Dang wins with Riven, undefeated

Riven, The Exile, the Legend Nam Dang used to win the Sacramento Showdown Series

The Sacramento Showdown Series, a sanctioned $25,000 event with 755 players, wrapped up overnight: Nam Dang takes the title with Riven, The Exile, the Radiance Legend. Dang did not drop a single match all weekend and closed the final 2-0 against Alex Gorica, the only player in the top four not on Riven. The top four earn a Regional Championship invite.

The finalRiven against Akali, 2-0

The event ran on October 24 and 25 at the Sacramento Convention Center, hosted by Laughing Dragon Events. After eleven rounds of Swiss and a cut to the top eight, the final put two very different decks on the same table: Riven, The Exile, the new Radiance Legend that owned the weekend, and Akali, Rogue Assassin, a Vendetta Legend from a year-old set.

Nam Dang took it 2-0 without dropping a game. That was the shape of his whole tournament: 9 wins, 0 losses and 2 draws in the Swiss, then three straight match wins in the bracket. No other player finished the weekend without a loss.

One quarterfinal was a mirror, Riven against Riven. Of the three Rivens that reached the semifinals only one was left standing: Nam Dang’s.

The metaOne new Legend out of nine, and she takes it

Out of 723 Legends registered at the start, Riven was already the most popular pick with 96 decks, 13% of the field. By the end there were 23 of her in the top 64, four in the top eight and the trophy. Of the other eight Radiance Legends only a single Evelynn is left near the top: Riven is the one new card that stands up to the established decks.

Riven

96 decks, 23 in the top 64

13% of the registered field, half the Top 8 and the title. Her day-one win rate was already sitting at 63%.

Akali

34 decks, 4 in the top 64

5% of the field, but the only non-Riven Legend to reach the final. Still the most convincing answer to the deck of the moment.

Every other Legend in the Top 8 came from an older set: Kennen, Heart of the Tempest and Akali from Vendetta, Rengar, Pridestalker from Unleashed, Viktor, Herald of the Arcane from Origins.

PrizingWho walks away with an invite

At 755 players Sacramento sits in Showdown Series Tier I, the bracket for events with 512 entrants or more. That means a Regional Championship invite for the top four — Nam Dang, Alex Gorica, Bo Su and Arnon — and a Competitor Pass to a Regional Qualifier of their choice for the top sixteen. Best-of finishers on a Legend from the last three sets also pick up a Standard Plated Legend.

Words worth knowing
TermWhat it means
SwissNobody is eliminated: each round pairs you with someone on your own score. Here it ran eleven rounds across two days.
CutOnce the Swiss ends only the top eight stay in, playing single elimination for the title.
Tier IThe Showdown Series bracket for events with at least 512 players: the one that hands out the most invites.
Competitor PassA ticket that puts you straight into a Regional Qualifier without buying in.

Why it matters to us. Sacramento is the first sanctioned event of this size played with Radiance legal, and the picture it hands over is a sharp one: a single genuinely competitive new deck and a group of veteran Legends holding the line. Anyone in Italy preparing for the Regional Championship in Stuttgart on November 6-8 — where Radiance is legal — now knows what is waiting on the other side of the table, and that Akali remains the most road-tested answer to Riven.

The short version

  • Nam Dang wins the Sacramento Showdown Series with Riven, The Exile, without losing a match all weekend.
  • He closed the final 2-0 over Alex Gorica on Akali, Rogue Assassin, the only non-Riven Legend in the top four.
  • Four Rivens in the top eight and 23 in the top 64: of the other Radiance Legends only one Evelynn is left up there.
  • Top four earn a Regional Championship invite, top sixteen a Regional Qualifier Competitor Pass.
